Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I see my dentist?

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), the recommendation is to visit a dentist twice a year for a checkup and professional cleaning.

What is the appropriate age to start taking my child to see a dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends children see a dentist as early as six months and no later than one year of age. It is during these developing months that a child’s baby teeth are coming in, and your dentist can examine the health of the first few teeth. After the initial visit, checkups every six months are recommended.

Why should I choose Johns Dental?

Dental care is about more than the health of your teeth. The health of your teeth and gums affects your entire body. You want a dentist who is professional, experienced, and proficient in medical advances, but you also want to be comfortable, relaxed, welcomed, and heard. At Johns Dental, we never forget that you have chosen us to provide your dental care, and we consider it an honor and our responsibility to deliver the most professional, thorough care in a warm, comforting environment.

My teeth feel fine; do I really need a checkup?

Yes! Although you may not currently be experiencing tooth pain, dental checkups are as essential as regular medical checkups. Proactive care helps prevent tooth decay, protects against gum disease, diagnoses or treats cavities, and helps create and maintain a beautiful, healthy smile.

What are some tips for daily care of my teeth?

  • Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day, and DON’T FORGET TO FLOSS!
  • Avoid foods high in sugar. Sugar increases the amount of bacteria in your mouth, which can lead to more plaque and potentially cavities.
  • Avoid tobacco, which not only stains your teeth but can also eventually lead to oral cancer.
  • Brush your tongue—this helps remove food particles and freshens your breath.
  • Rinse with mouthwash.
  • Avoid biting down on hard candies or ice cubes.
  • Always wear a mouth guard when playing high-impact sports.

Do I still need to see a dentist if I have braces?

Yes! If you or someone in your family has braces, it is even more important to visit your dentist regularly. Braces are like food traps, causing food to get stuck where a toothbrush can’t reach. You don’t want to go through the pain and expense of braces only to have cavities, gingivitis, or gum disease after the braces come off!

Do you accept insurance, and do you offer payment options?

We accept most traditional insurance plans; contact our office to verify acceptance. Johns Dental does not participate in Health Management Organizations; however, we will be happy to file your insurance claims for you. We accept checks, cash, or credit cards. We also offer a flexible payment plan. Please see our Financial Coordinator for details. We are happy to file insurance for your reimbursement as long as you are free to choose your own dentist. Another option is CareCredit; you may apply here.

I’m scared to go to the dentist; what do you suggest?

First, make your appointment. Get it on the calendar so you know it’s coming, and you can prepare. Second, please let us know that going to the dentist is one of your fears. We promise—you aren’t alone and there’s no reason to be embarrassed.

We will do our best to ensure you are comfortable, informed, treated with respect, and offered exceptional, attentive care.
